Edged & Impact Weaponry Strategy And Tactics
Basic 6 Count Flow

This is a very easy drill that teaches more than what meets the eye.  Always keep an open mind when learning a new drill; often times things are not what they seem.  This drill for the beginner teaches you a basic pattern in which to practice the mechanics of certain motions.  To an intermediate student this drill teaches you precision and timing of basic motions while building speed and sensitivity.  To the advanced student this drill teaches you the numerous possibilities of flow, entry, disarming and basic to advanced stick sparring as well as empty hand and knife flow.

#1.      Start with overhead Roof block

#2.      Strike a #1 angle strike to your partner.

#3.      Step back with your right leg. Strike straight down (drop stick) onto the incoming strike, be sure to check their weapon hand when you make your down strike.

#4.      Flow into a vertical down strike to the top of your partner’s head.  Step forward with your right foot as you make the strike.

#5.      Counter attack to your right side with Quatro Cantos (4 Wall).

#6.      Now strike down to your partner’s leg using a double force leg/hip strike.

This is your basic pattern.  Take it slow at first and eventually as you gain confidence go faster but you must always be in control of yourself.  In other words, if you get used to going too fast you run the risk of developing poor technique and injuring yourself or your partner.  Remember to work together.  This is not a competition.  It’s a valuable training tool.
In the six count pattern above it is inferred that the stick is in the right hand.  If you try it on the left side you must imagine a mirror image of the right side.  Teach the right hand first as most people are right handed.  When you can demonstrate this sequence with skill, precision, proper striking mechanics and footwork, we will move on to the next set.

*Footwork:
#1.  Right 45         #3.  Right false step        #5.  180 Side Step right
#2.  Left Broken    #4.  Right 45                   #6.  180 Side Step left
