Sifu
Al Dacascos was born in Hawaii on September 6th, 1942. His training of
martial arts began at the age of 21 under Mr. Chong, Mr. Sullivan and
Mr. "Gummyman" Higami with Judo and Jiu Jitsu. All these trainers came
from Honolulu, Hawaii. At the same time Mr. Al Dacascos began his Kung
Fu training of the "Fu Choy Li Fut" Style under Mike Chong. He was
mainly interested in the contact phase of the beat and kick arts. He
joined the Kajukenbo-Style of Kempo Karate under teacher, Mr. Sid
Asunion. There he later received his Black Belt ( in 1959/60 ). During
this time he completed the knowledge with help from Master Adriano
Emperado, the founder and organizer of Kajukenbo. Adriano Emperado is
also a master in the art with the Philippine Stick Fighting.
Sifu
Al is an 8th Degree Black Sash in Wun Hop Kuen Do. He was the best
fighter of the year from 1969-73 and the 6th best fighter in the United
States in 1973. He fought against some of the best, for example: Fred
Wren, Byong Yu, Bill Wallace, Chuck Norris, Howard Jackson, Benny
Urqidez, Joe Hayes, Mike Warren, Demetrius Havanas, Ron Marchini - to
mention only a few. He was named to the American Black Belt Magazine
Hall of Fame in 1977 as Kung fu fighter of the year. In 1992 he was
named to the Inside Kung Fu Hall of Fame as well. He has won over 200
championships and still holds the record for the most trophies won at
the Long Beach Internationals.
He
is a three-time National Grand Champion, two-time Rocky Mountain Grand
Champion and was a Colorado State Grand Champion. He founded Wun Hop
Kuen Do (The way of the combined fist) in 1969, and has turned out such
champions as Karen Shepard, Eric Lee, Bill Owens, Christian Wulf, Karyn
Turner, and (of course) Mark Dacascos. Sifu Al was also honored at the
Masters of Martial Arts event, hosted by Wesley Snipes.
Sifu
Dacascos has also trained in Tobosa Kali/Eskrima under Raymond Tobosa
and is a 5th degree Black belt under Ciriaco “Cacoy” Canete in Doce
Pares Eskrima.
